Born from a desire to uplift local talent and reclaim Ukrainian identity, Gasoline Radio launched in Kyiv in 2022 as a platform for emerging artists and forgotten traditions. More than just a station, it’s a sanctuary for creativity and community—bridging generations through sound, and challenging long-standing cultural inferiority with bold pride. For the first edition of Airtime, Refuge Worldwide series spotlighting grassroots radio worldwide, Johanna Urbancik speaks with co-founder Oleksii Makarenko about how Gasoline Radio became a lifeline for Ukraine’s musical soul.

In 2022 Gasoline Radio came to life driven by a desire to create a community-focused radio station offering up-and-coming local talents a platform. The Kyiv-based station's vision is clear: to nurture a sanctuary where emerging artists can chart their artistic journeys and showcase their talents globally.
