We had a conversation with the Indonesian duo Gabber Modus Operandi to find out what makes up their DNA. Their experimental rave music is heavily influenced by traditional Balinese sounds and folklore. Kasimyn and Ican explain how “Alay culture” keeps inspiring them, which they define as an internet-fed popular culture in Indonesia, far from the Western trends. In our exchange, they also describe the absence of platform for contemporary electronic music in Bali which led them to create the “counter-art festival” Ravepasar.
Listen to the discussion to hear more about the duo’s history, influences and music production.
The interview was conducted by David bola and recorded during Nuits sonores and European Lab, with Radio Kapitał, IDA Radio, Rádio Quântica and Rinse France.
